Tick …Tock …Tick …Tock

This week we have implemented 2 new items in the Barela home…timers. One for Mason’s room and one for Kaia and Theia’s room. There are several reasons that led me to OSH where I purchased my 2 new best friends. Mason no longer takes naps but now has alone time in his room. Up until now the term “alone” time was held very loosely. He attempted to do this but came out at least 15 times in his 45 min time for whatever reason. Setting the timer and hearing it ring at the end gives him a goal and a great sense of accomplishment when he succeeds. Another reason is Miss T is in the height of separation anxiety. Screams her little head off and is pretty much inconsolable by anyone but MOMMMMMYYYY!!!! That is what I hear coming from the church nursery or during Mason’s preschool when I am not right with her. This past week I had both girls with me during my 2 hour mom’s Bible study because they wouldn’t stay in their class. Miss K is fine but once I take Theia away then she is unhappy, so it’s a 2 for 1 deal:) I’m hoping instilling some time away from me at home will help Theia when we are other places. I also want to teach the girls how to play by themselves, not with me or with each other, at an early age. Or at least earlier than I did with Mason. In the late afternoon when everyone is a little crazy I set the timer for 15 min. The girls go in to their beds with some toys and books and Mason sits at the kitchen table “book time”. This teaches Mason how to sit and read/look at a books quietly. Hopefully it will increase his love for books even more and when we are in a place (doctor/church/dentist etc) when he needs to sit quietly he knows how to do this. I’m hoping to gradually increase these time increments and eventually give the girls “book time” as well.

We’ll see, it’s only week one and this is all best case scenario. But Mason is doing better with his alone time and does an excellent job with book time. The girls pretty much scream for me the entire 15 minutes. But as for me…I LOVE IT!

Mr. Big Man On Campus

Well it’s official we have a preschooler in the house. We are doing a preschool co-op with 3 other families from our church you each have one 4 year old. There are 3 rowdy boys and 1 sweet girl that make up our little preschool. We’ve only done 2 weeks (one day each) but so far the kids love it and us Moms are enjoying it to as we figure it out along the way. Our goal is to make it fun, flexible and a place to learn while they play. Mason loves it! You can tell he feels very important and BIG because “he goes to school now”. He’s a great listener and learner, which I already knew but fun to see in a different setting. The first morning was an adjustment for all of us so there we the expected melt downs from all 3 of my kids. But day #2 was much better for Mase and girls are still adjusting to other mommies watching them while their own Mommy is in the next room:) But it’s great because there are 2 other little girls close to their age to play with and so much of what we are trying to do with the BIG kids the little girls can do too.

I’m excited to be a part of Mason’s learning experience. To see him learn and try new things for the first time. To see him learn from others and teach others. To see him do well and to see him fail. I’m thankful that I can be there to celebrate with him and to comfort him when he needs it. I’m thankful I can be a part of laying a foundation for him that will prayerfully lead him to a life that glorifies God. This is a great adventure to be on!

Drumroll please…

TA-DA!!!

So friends here it is. My new blog, thanks to Mr. Barela! Didn’t he do a great job?!? There are parts that were a collaborative effort but mostly, (like all the techy stuff) it was all him. I love it and I’m so thankful for all the work he put into it. And so proud of how much he has learned. Wow, he’s a smart one these days:)

You’ll have to check out our flickr page (top right of the page). There is a cute little slide show of our family.

Under Construction

As you may have noticed my blog is looking a little different. I’m changing things up a bit with the help of my oh so techy husband,Brian. This gives me a good chance to take a little break from blogging for the next week to get things set up and catch up on life a bit. Come back next week Monday September, 14 for an all new look and see what exciting things are happening in the Barela Family.

“A” for Effort

Here’s an amusing story  that I thought I would share with you. Just a little insight into my life.

Most mornings I try to have a little quiet time to myself to prepare for the day and spend time with the Lord. In an ideal world I would do this every and for 30-45 minutes. This does not happen with 3 little ones and I have accepted this reality. Well this particular morning I did not get an early start on the day but I still attempted to have a quiet loud time while the kids were playing in the morning. I have this great new book that my friend Kyra told me about that is short devotionals focusing on Psalm 51. It’s called Whiter than snow by Paul David Tripp. Really really good! I knew with the kids being up I could only get maybe 10 minutes of time. Here’s how the scenario went…

I’m sitting at the kitchen table reading.
Music is playing loudly in Mason’ room.
Kids are running from room to room like normal.
Mason decides to play the drums even louder to his already loud music.
Girls chime in with shaking bells and tambourine.
I’m still reading.
One girl steals instrument from the other. Fight breaks out.
I stop reading to find out who did what and put the appropriate person in time out and console the other who is crying.
After that is all resolved. I go back to reading.
Mason climbs on my chair and gets in my face to ask me what I’m doing.
He wants to read his bible too. He proceeds to bring every bible he owns to the table and starts reading aloud at the table with me.
Girls climb on to chairs as well and start reading bibles.
Girls then have the great idea to climb on the table.
I put them back on the chairs with them protesting loudly and go back to reading.
Mason asks about 10 questions in a matter of 47 seconds.
I try to answer with short but thoughtful answers and of course this is not satisfying to him and he lets me know.
One of the girls pooped.
I stop to change her, then go back to reading.
The one other poops.
I stop to change her and go back to reading again. At this point I have read the same 3 sentences about 12 times.
Now one of the girls is sitting on my lap because she was crying and is now trying to take my book out of my hands.
Mason is still reading aloud.
I start to read aloud so I can hear myself over the chaos while holding my book over my head so little hands cannot reach it.
Mason goes to the bathroom now.
One girl still on my lap while the other is dumping out as many toy bins as she can get her hands on.
Music in Mason’s room is still blaring.
Mason screams from the bathroom and needs wiped so I take care of that.
I come back and continue reading aloud to the finish.

Yes, this all happened in a matter of 30 minutes. To be honest I can’t tell you what I read that day but I do know that God was giving me patience and perseverance during this time!

Time outs for all

Last night I caught some cute pics of the girls putting their babies in time out. I’m not sure what the babies did but Miss K took her baby to the designated time out spot and was very stern with her baby saying “No. No. No. You sit.” Yes, this does sound very familiar. I’ve heard myself saying it a lot lately for various reasons, multiple times a day. I’ve even had to make a second spot because often both of them have done something to each other and I can’t figure out what exactly happened therefore both little girls take a break. Thankfully I haven’t had to make a third time out spot. Let’s hope we don’t get there. There is a new feisty streak in girls that leads to pinching, hitting, pulling of the hair and biting. Not pretty. Most times it’s all resolved in a matter of minutes, fixed with an “I sorry , I give you” (translation= I’m sorry and I forgiving you) and a hug. But sometimes there is a stubborn side that comes out when an apology is no where in sight and not heard for awhile. Well in toddler time it’s a while. Stubborn. Stubborn. Stubborn. And who does this remind me of? Oh, how much would I love to say their Daddy? But no, it’s me. For as long as I can remember my pride comes roaring out when an apology is needed and saying two simple words…I’m sorry is so hard. To my credit I am getting better since I’ve had lots of opportunities in marriage:) But it’s still so hard. And I could use a time out myself from time to time.

Hopefully we are instilling the practice of humbling ourselves to admit our wrongs and the practice of giving grace at a young age that will last a lifetime. They are already passing it along to their babies so I think they are catching on:)

It hit me

Just last Saturday, somewhere around mile 8 of my 17 mile run did it hit me that I am going to be running a marathon! I’ve been training since the summer sometime, following a schedule as best I can with the realities of our travels this summer and just everyday life with 3 little ones and an husband that is important to me. But really it just hit me like a ton of bricks that I am actually going to do this…and soon! October 18 to be exact. It was so real that I imagined myself crossing the finishing line and seeing Brian and I actually started tearing up! I’m excited and nervous and to be honest I’m looking forward to it being over, at least the training part. It’s starting to take a toll on my body. I remember this from the first time I trained for the Columbus marathon I ran in college. But that was 11 years and 3 babies ago and my body is a little different now to say the least:)

So tonight I will be laying out my running outfit along with my shotblocks to eat along the way and aquaphore for chaffing, putting new songs of my shuffle, charging my beloved Garmin watch and setting my alarm for 5AM to be on the road by 5:30. Thankfully 2 hours and 45 min (give or take) and 18 miles later I will be home. And have the rest of the day to revel in the fact that I am that much closer to my goal. And the rest of the day to limp around the house because of my tired legs!

Big Night!

I’m getting ready to head to campus with the kids for our first CRU meeting of the school year! We are excited to start another year of ministry at Chico State with Campus Crusade for Christ. We have had a great week so far passing our fliers and water bottles, doing surverys, hosting a movie night and games on the field. It’s been a busy week and there’s lots more to come. Our prayer for tonight is that people would feel “at home” and comfortable the moment they walk into CRU. That it would be a place that Jesus would be known and where they can grow to know Jesus more along side others. Will you join us in praying for the new students of Chico State seeking to find a place to belong?

Happy 4th Birthday little man!

love, mommy & daddy

Celebration time.

This weekend we celebrated the little man’s 4th birthday which is tomorrow. We went low key. Invited a couple of friends, ordered $5 Little Ceasars pizza, sliced some watermelon, threw out some carrots and dip, made a cake, got ice cream, filled up the kiddie pool, put out slip-n-slide and called it a party! It was great! Mason loved that the party was all about him and his friends having fun. I’m happy we could celebrate our big 4 year old. More to come tomorrow…all about our little man.
