1. Tonight Mr. Barela and I are celebrating our 8th anniversary and going to our favorite restaurant in town, 5th Street Steak House. Yummy! Our anniversary was last week but seeing that Brian was out of the country not much celebrating was going on. Can’t wait for quality time with my husband while enjoying quality food! When we do get an evening out we find that we can get more talking in those 2 hours away than pretty much a whole week or more. Tonight I will soak up every minute of it!

2. A Ninja Turtle and 2 princesses/ballerinas have invaded our house for Halloween. Yesterday we had a party to go to and Mason didn’t understand why I wasn’t dressing up. After much insistence this is what I came up in the hour before the party.

And the kiddos… not the greatest pics but the best I could do with kids on extreme sugar highs!

3. We had a the best family night celebrating Fall on Tuesday. As Brian commented I was in my glory: we were together as a family, doing traditions and celebrating my favorite season.  loved it! We carved pumpkins, Brian made some amazing pumpkin seeds, we ate warm apple crisp and watched Charlie Brown’s Great Pumpkin. It’s an evening I will look back on for a long time. I love building these memories as a family.

4. My favorite picture of the week…oh I am in love with it! Mason is his Daddy’s boy through and through. He wants to be just like him, prefers to be right by his side, loves to show off everything to him, looks up to him, gains much confidence from Daddy’s words of encouragement. A daddy-son relationship is a special bond and I’m thankful for the one Brian and Mason have.

5. In school most weeks we’ve been doing a station I’ve dubbed the “letter workshop”. At this station we do anything we can think of to help the kids learn how to make their letters. Along with ding letter worksheets some fun things we’ve done are making letters with play dough, putting finger paint in a baggie and duct taped it up and had them trace letters in it. We also practiced tracing letters in rice on a cookie sheet or in pudding on a plate. They loved this of course because they could lick off their fingers! Always looking for more ideas, if you have any pass them along.

That’s it for this week, have a great weekend!

It’s working!

Reading collage
A while back I posted my new idea of using timers to give the kids alone time/ reading time and to give me a little break during a crazy time of the day.  We started off at 10 min for each of the kids and we are now up to 25 min. Mason is at the kitchen table with his books and the girls are in each of their beds with books. I like to do it between 4:30-5:00. It’s a good time for the kids to have their own space and for me to do last minute dinner things, set the table, fill milk cups etc. The kids know the routine and pick out the books they want for their time. I’ve been pleasantly surprised how quickly (relatively speaking) they have grown accustomed to the routine and for the most part with no complaints. Even if they are complaining I still stick to the routine because I REALLY like this time to take a breather before the last couple of hours of our day. And it helps the craziness of dinner go a little more smoothly.

But I don’t want to leave you with the impression that every time they sit quietly and read their books as they are supposed to. Rarely are they quiet, usually yelling reading aloud. Yesterday, I left the kitchen for a minute and came back to find Mason stripped down to his underwear, fighting in a imaginary battle with his sword. (wish I had a picture!)  and I found the girls had a different plan as well. See pic below. This new routine is a work in progress!

1. I have been flying solo this week without my wonderful husband. I am so excited to share that our week has gone very well. We have had minimal meltdowns, good sleep and lots of fun. I know I have lot of people praying for me. I’m so thankful for good days when the husband is not around. It is a gift.

2. Picked our first red bell pepper of the season. I know it’s almost November, I guess our pepper plant is a little slow on his job. But none the less it was a great pepper. We enjoyed it on one of our favorite ways to make pizza. We get wheat Naan bread from Trader’s Joes, a little sauce, cheese, shredded broccoli and carrots and turkey pepperoni. Yummmmy!

3. The girls got a little wooden kitchen for the birthday as a combined gift from the the grandparents. It is a huge hit, actually with all 3 kids. We have been making lots of food and serving it up all day. It’s fun to see their imaginations come to life. Any time you want to stop by let us know, I’m sure they will whip up a batch of their delicious cookies:)

4. To much surprise to me my body has recovered very well and quickly from the marathon. So much so that I am itching for Brian to get home so I can go on a run! I’m looking forward to a run with no certain time or distance. Just to go and be done when I want without a BIG race in my every thought with each step. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to get out there tomorrow.

5. I’ve had Christmas on my mind lately. I’m thinking about gifts I want to make for others, what crafty things I can get my hands on. This week we did something TOP SECRET for some gifts to give to others. We’ve been reading Christmas stories and even watched Polar Express today. Yep. I’m excited.

Internationally known…

Whose internationally known? Well that would be my husband, who is in Antalya, Turkey this week. There is a Campus Crusade conference focusing on using social media in ministry and Brian was asked to do a seminar as part of the conference. He flew out of San Francisco late Sunday night after my marathon and with the 10 hour time difference arrived in Turkey late Monday night. Thankfully he has adjusted to the time change fairly well and has been enjoying the conference, the food, atmosphere and the new connections he’s made. Like his roommate is the national campus director of Jordan! We’ve been able to text, which is crazy, skype a couple of times and keep up through twitter and facebook. So thankful for modern technology, it makes him feel a little bit closer than he really is:) Here is a short video of him and where he is staying. Looking forward to him coming home Friday night!

Victory!

I am more than happy to share with everyone photos and video of me finishing the SF Nike Womens Marathon! It was an amazing adventure that I am so thankful for and also so happy it is OVER! More to come on my experience but I just had to get these pics out to you. Thanks for all the prayers and encouragement family and friends!

Before the race…very nervous and excited!

After the race… so relieved.

Showered, sore, happy, proud!

t&kblogpic2yr

2 years today I excused myself from bed rest and took a car ride to the park to sit on the bench and watch Mason play.

2 years ago tonight I had a big bowl of chili made by Brian, Mason and I and some homemade chocolate chip cookies.

2 years ago I was more than uncomfortable, big as a house and overwhelmed with what was to come but at the same time felt a peace that could only come from God.

2 year ago I was so excited to meet my daughters and to start life as a family of 5.

It all happened so quickly.

My water broke, immediate intense labor, a 30 min car drive in the darkness, operating room and 2 babies born all within 3 hours.

Kaia Grace and Theia Penelope entered our lives and have changed us forever.

Tomorrow our girls turn 2!

~More to come on the birthday girls tomorrow.

Our little learner

Within the last couple of weeks we have seen a change in Mason’s desire and ability to read! Now, he’s not reading or anything but he’s really enjoying trying to figure out what letters makes what sounds, what words makes what sounds, how to write letters etc. I wondered how does one teach another to read? But I’m seeing that slowly it just happens with the practice of learning sounds of letters. Not a big revelation I know but still I wasn’t sure:) I love reading to him and even more I love to hear him “reading” out loud, especially his Bible. So precious.

We’ve also seen an increase in the amount of questions he asks a day. He wants to know everything about everything. And I mean everything! I like to see how his mind works, what he takes in from situations and then what he somehow twists around into something totally different. Pretty amusing!

Here are some of the latest questions that I’ve had to come up with answers to:

  • How is carpet made?
  • When will I die?
  • What are all the parts of the car?
  • Who goes to heaven?
  • When we leave somewhere how come we can’t see them anymore?
  • Why are there lanes in the road?
  • How do pumpkins grow?
  • How do my muscles grow?
  • Where do clouds come from?
  • Can God hear me right now?

Uhhhh, these are just within the last few days. Exhausting, challenging but amusing and rewarding at the same time.
